In Hindus, the Mangalsutra is not just a piece of jewellery item, but it is scared thread of love worn by Married women as a symbol of their successful marriage.
The word Mangalsutra is derived from two words Mangal meaning ‘Auspicious’ and Sutra meaning ‘Thread’. It is a scared thread made of strings of small black beads with a golden/ diamond pendant.
In South India, it is known as ‘Thaaly’ or ‘Mangalyam’, it is made up of yellow thread painted with Turmeric paste.
It is tied by Groom onto bride’s neck with three knots at the time of the marriage as a promise to live with his wife forever. The significance of Mangalsutra is further enhanced as it is believed that it protects the couple from evil powers and for this the wife wears it until the death of her husband.
